About INHBPA

Indiana Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association functions as the state-level chapter of the National HBPA.

We are the horsemen on the backside of the track, including owners, trainers, grooms, pony riders, stall help, and hot walkers and others who help prepare, train and care for our equine athletes.  Any owner, owner-trainer, or trainer licensed by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission is eligible for membership after one start in any qualified thoroughbred race in Indiana.

ABOUT

OFFICERS & BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Indiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (INHBPA) functions as the state-level chapter of the national HBPA.

The nearly 4,000 members of the Indiana HBPA are led by a volunteer board of directors, elected every three years.

As an organization, we represent horsemen in a wide variety of venues and interactions, while providing services that improve the lives of those on the backside of Indiana race tracks.

  • We provide benevolence to horsemen in need, a core package of health care services, education and chaplaincy programs to the backstretch, and much-needed insurance coverage to eligible members.
  • We negotiate with the tracks on a collective basis on issues affecting the common interest of all thoroughbred horsemen and women, including schedule, stakes, programs, safety issues and working conditions.
  • We work to promote effective and appropriate state and federal legislation, rules and regulations, and uniform racing policies beneficial to the common interests of horsemen in Indiana;
  • We represent the common interests of horsemen at various meetings and hearings of racing associations, racing commissions, and other racing organizations.
  • We strive to improve the image of thoroughbred racing in Indiana and the relationships between horsemen, other members of the racing industry and the general public.

Since the national organization was first formed, sixty years ago, the HBPA has always been dedicated to one constant core value: horsemen helping horsemen.  The Indiana HBPA lives that value every day, at the track and in our myriad interactions with regulators, officials, a wide variety of publics and our members.  Wherever there is a need to ensure the integrity of racing, the health and welfare of racehorses and participants in racing, and the interests of the racing public; there, you will find the Indiana HBPA.
